As spring break is about to start and then be over with in a flash, the time of projects will be upon us. Each class is a journey of sorts, and each project is a summation of all that we have learned on this journey.

This journey of the New Media Drivers License is an unique one, with no traditional weekly meetings and with no traditional walls or uncomfortable desks or even the lectures. The tests are thrown out the window to the weekly blog posting of various aspects of digital marketing. To recap it all in my presentation, I will discuss:

*How blogging has invaded our lives and how it can help you with your career, future or current.

*How Google has not only become a verb but how its tools will make the whole of the Internet and your computer more useful, and eventually you’ll never need to use a piece of paper again.

*Search Engine Optimization, and if your not on the first page of Google you don’t exist, and how Adwords is the alternative to Organic Search.

*Social Media and how we all can connect via the internet, and all the networking possibilities. Id like to touch on how to use for friendships and how to use it for business and how to eventually converge these two aspects.

*The importance of knowing your target audience and giving them what they want through using the Internet, and how press releases on-line have change the format for PR.

Now as this journey is about to end, I am not graduating like many of my fellow classmates or as I should have been as it has been four years. So one can I hope I accomplish this class with a license, this license guiding me in my other classes and giving me a head-start, and farther off in my future career. I certainly know I will use all that I have learned here in my internship this summer. So come March 21st I can just take off and drive…

His book The New Rules of Marketing and PR is a guide that everyone should read!

You don’t need a huge budget anymore, the tools are easily accessible online, for you to reach your consumer. Not only is this less expensive it is also more effective, and allows you to not only reach your consumer but establish a relationship with them.

So if you actually want people to not only buy your product but also keep on buying it, don’t you think you should go out and by this book? Yeah you probably should if you actually want to sell something. You should have probably done this yesterday, since the new rules can only stay new for so long.

So words like twitter,

Do you exist if Google can’t find you? Even beyond the philosophical debates, in all realities it’s pretty much a negative. So when your life in business terms depends on being on the top page in google, SEO or search engine optimization is the name of the game. So here are a few pointers….
-Keywords
You need to place the right words in the right places so google can find you’re site.
-Popularity
The internet is just like high school, the more popular you are the higher you’re ranked. Popularity is still all about who knows you, try to post your site in relevant directories, and network!
-Track yourself

This is the key to know what your doing right and where you need improvement.

To get the basics of SEO I suggest you go here. Plus it includes useful tools for SEO, that are free!

Social networks aren’t necessarily a new thing for me, I joined myspace and facebook while I was still in high school before they were as widely popular as they are today. However, I did have a twitter and linked in account for about a month now I haven’t really used them as frequently as I probably should. Especially when facebook is always the second link I go to after my email. With linked in when I am more actively searching for a job I hope it will be a great resource to utilize. Twitter I have to dig into a little bit more, since I typically just update my facebook status and have my friends on there comment on that, it seems a tad bit repetitive of a technology, though if facebook and twitter converged at some point that would be great!
And here are my links, to these wonderful social media tools:

This week I delved into the phenomenon that is Google Adwords. Overall the steps were pretty easy to follow and the instructions weren’t confusing. What was really the most difficult part was trying to creative in just two short lines, especially when trying to advertise a blog rather than a product. However, I tried my best and it still seemed like it came up a little short to me. Keywords were a little bit challenging in the beginning to come up with but with some ingenuity or rather using the tools Google nicely put on the side the task was accomplished. I came up with the following keywords:
internet online marketing advertising business
cost per click advertising
web page advertising
blog advertising
keyword marketing
marketing on the internet
marketing communications
internet marketing promotion advertising
internet marketing
new online advertising
Rachel Macauley’s New Media Blog
Rachel Macaley
Rachel Macauley Google Tools
digital marketing
new media drivers license
advertising student blog
technology blog
emerging social media
The miser that I am or rather the extremely funds deprived college student I am, I originally only had a budget of $1 a month for my campaign so realistically I realized I would get between 0 and 2 clicks, if that. Not to mention my ad not showing up in any of my searches for this assignment. Thus, I went back and decided to invest a little more dough into this. So I invested a $25 dollar budget despite the warnings to do at least $50. Then when that didn’t turn out any results I went up to $50, but even then no results so I wonder if something was wrong with my ad itself. Especially after seeing a classmates ad, (Rochelle’s) a few times, I decided to go back to my title ad and simply title it Rachel Macauley’s blog. I tweaked everything in the title words, and added a bunch of new keywords with all the titles of my blog posts and my name and even increased my monthly budget to $100…and yet no impressions.Well I thought I did most of the homework on this assignment before the due date but as its nearing 8 pm this Saturday and I thought I just had to write this blog, I am throwing in my towel Google, you win.

Google reader is important because it allows one to access all essential blogs and feeds in one place instead of traveling to the various different sites. Google reader not only allows you to easily access these articles but also allows you to share them with your friends and family. This can be done through your blog or through facebook. You can also access this application through your mobile device and display reader on your iGoogle.

I like it because it makes me actually read all the blog and articles I would never have the time to go to on my own. I dislike it because I don’t think its as user friendly as it could be, the tutorials are just vague explanations of what it offers and its somewhat confusing. Though this is an interesting one here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSPZ2Uu_X3Y. My favorite feature is the ability to star articles that you like and then you always have them easily accessible again in reader without having to bookmark them. I probably will continue to use this after this week because of how great the information was that I actually found.

Through Google Blog Search ,I recently found a blog on Blogger entitled Leigh’s Blitherings. The blog post was all about how in helping her brother market his vintage clothing business, she learned the power of the blog. Her bother created a blog on vintage leather and takes an interesting perspective on the topic. Now he is the third link when you search “vintage leather jackets” this reiterates what we learned in class a few saturdays ago.

Leigh, goes on to say that this the key for businesses. With a little heart and ingenuity blogs can be what brings a human face into the corporate world, however this is not just a task for the ad agency. It is a lot harder than just putting all the work onto someone else. However, its something that could be essential in the marketing world soon. When days of SEO are they key to making it or being invisible, blogs are the new billboard.

So when you search “vintage leather jackets” or “crochet animals” or “pineapple slicer” a blog about what you and your company can all be displayed at once, with no digging by the consumer.

Last Wednesday I went to see Michael Pertschuk, whose known for “ giving good intentions a bad name”, speak for Media Advocacy. The majority of the lecture was a discussion on how advertising and particularly that of Vincent DeMarco brought the use of advertising into the legislature with anti tobacco ads. Pertschuk gave us the key to Dermarco’s success calling it the Dermarco factor. Which are….
• Planning and Integration in the beginning.
• Staging
• Resourcefulness in earning media attention
• Getting news to trust you
• Message framing and discipline
• Paid media to structure unpaid
• Physically going after groups
• Relentlessness

Physically going after groups is the key to what the Obama Campaign did. In Pertschuk’s article in The Nation, he asks what are these over 5 million volunteers going to do next? Pertschuk believes that they could help defend against the lobbyists. I myself was one of those volunteers and believe that this is a very valid point. Obama has to continue the relationship he has built with his voters to help get his policies into action
